Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this course is to provide teacher training in English as a second or foreign language. The intensive three-week program provides instruction in the most current techniques and strategies for teaching English as well as opportunities to teach and tutor international students on the Concordia campus.

Dates and Fees

This course is offered every summer. The next course is July 21 - August 8, 2008.

Tuition/fees: $1,100.00

Additional Expenses:

On campus housing is available. The cost of housing is approximately $350.00. This cost can vary depending on whether you need additional days of housing before or after the course. If you want campus housing, please download the housing form and submit it with your application. Also, if you need transportation to campus, please fill out the transportation form and Concordia will arrange airport pick up at no extra cost.

Courses

Introduction to ESL Teaching provides an overview of the latest theories of second language acquisition, methods, and teaching philosophies.

ESL Teaching Methods explores traditional and innovative methods of teaching English to non-native speakers.

Teaching the Four Skills provides practical suggestions and methods for teaching reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Classroom Practicalities examines lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment and testing.

The Role of Grammar in ESL: In addition to providing students with a thorough review of English grammar, this course also covers the latest theories on the role of grammar in language learning.

Electives: Each term there will be courses that specialize in a particular area of ESL teaching such as pronunciation, teaching children, designing ESL programs, teaching low literacy populations, and understanding cross-cultural values.

Practicum gives students the opportunity to see and apply the theories and techniques they learn in classes. Students will observe various ESL classes and get hands-on experience teaching.

How to Apply

This course is offered as continuing education. To apply, students need to complete the TESL Application form, the essay describing their goals and objectives for taking this course, and a $200.00 deposit, paid by check, wire transfer or credit card.

Students may also pay with credit card by calling the business office at 503-280-8501.

Students who have deposited and need to cancel their application, will receive a full refund if they withdraw 30 days before the start of the program. If it is less than 30 days, students will receive a refund of half of their deposit.

Group Option

There is also the option for groups to take this course at a site other than the Concordia-Portland campus. The course can be offered in a foreign country or other locale in the United States for an additional fee of $300 per student, a minimum of 20 students, and one-half of the tuition payment two months prior to the start of the course.

A group of 20 or more may also arrange to take the course on the Concordia campus during any three-week period they choose. In this case, one-half of the regular tuition is due two months prior to the start of the course.
