The Concordia Teacher Corps program was created in response to ongoing formal and informal partnerships with programs in north and northeast Portland who serve area youth in need of tutoring services. Since its inception in 2006 the CTC program has remained focused on reaching and exceeding the goals laid out for the program. The more than 60 Concordia University students who serve in the program are hand selected and provide tutoring to elementary, middle, and high school students in Portland and in Klamath Falls. This fall alone the program saw significant results over the total of last year's outcomes. Concordia University remains committed to this program and to the positive impact it has on our community's neediest youth and on the lives of our students.

  • This fall alone CTC has served more than 550 students. Last year (07/08) CTC served over 343 students.
  • This fall alone CTC volunteers spent more than 940 hours serving students. Last year they spent over 1,200 hours serving students.
  • This fall alone more than 60 students have become tutors. Last year 50 Concordia students volunteered in the program.
  • Last year CTC was active at 16 sites through 12 partnerships. This fall alone that number is 17 sites through 13 partnerships.

What does the future hold?

The progress made by the CTC in just one semester of Fall 2009 compared to two semesters last year is tremendous. It signals both the great need of our community and the great promise of the future. With the total impact for this year yet unknown, what is sure is that the goals of the program for the coming year and overall are obtainable and have great meaning for the community.

Goals for the upcoming year include:

  • Increase tutor activity and support for 2009-10
  • Increase number of sites and new partnerships (Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp and Boys & Girls Aid)
  • Increase visibility at existing sites
  • Increase number of students served to 600
  • Increased attention to depth of training, support and resources for tutors
  • Increase number of tutors to 80 Concordia University students
