Writing Center at Concordia University

What is the writing center?

The Writing Center is a forum for resources, advice, and conversation about writing for the students, faculty, and staff at Concordia University. Specifically we:

  • empower writers to improve their individual writing projects;
  • provide information and resources about specific writing concerns;
  • provide pedagogical support for faculty who use writing in their classrooms.

We welcome writers and their work at all stages of the writing process and respect the authority of individual authors to make decisions about the final direction of their projects.

What can I expect when I meet with a writing center tutor?

Writing center consultants will talk with you about your writing assignment in any class, at any point in the process from brainstorming ideas to polishing your sentences. They can help you understand the requirements for a paper. They can help you outline a paper, develop a thesis statement, and structure your paragraphs. They can help you think about finding evidence on the Internet or in the library. They can show you how to correctly document your sources so you don’t accidentally plagiarize. They can point out grammatical errors and show you how to correct and avoid them in the future. They can’t just correct your paper, though. Not only would that be beyond the boundaries of academic integrity, it does nothing to help you learn to be a better writer.

When and why should I visit the writing center?

Any writer can benefit from conversation with another writer about a work in progress. Even if you’re a strong writer, sometimes writing about a topic that’s unusual or in a format you’re not familiar with can be confusing. The earlier in the process you take a writing assignment, the more help a consultant can be. Not only will you have more time to work through the ideas the two of you develop, but it’s much easier to finish a paper when it’s on the right track! Plus, you are welcome to return to the writing center with a second draft if you’re worried about more minor concerns like apostrophes or comma splices or a great title for your paper.

Where is the Writing Center?
